So few of these old stately homes exist anymore. The red brick-coloured building with its towers and crenelations has a magnificent view down the sloping, manicured lawn and across the Hamoaze and Sound to the shores of Devon

Two couples are walking down the hill after their visit to the great house where the Earls of Edgumbe used to live, until the 7th Earl sold it into public ownership.
