A Dartmoor pony in the wild

As promised a few posts ago [@Shadow: happy now? :-)]

Dartmoor in thaw

Here's a shot of a Dartmoor pony in the wild, taken on my recent trip up onto Dartmoor.

These ponies run free for most of the year and, even though considered "wild", they still belong to the various farmers on the moors. Every year they have a foal roundup and allot the new foals to the correct herds/farms.

Dartmoor Pony in the wild

Lighting conditions were difficult in this shot. It was during the start of the thaw from all the recent snow in the UK and the air had a very clear crisp quality. In the bright sunlight, even though the sun was quite low in the sky, it lead to very contrasty shooting conditions for black and white, too much even for my tastes—besides, it was in all the wrong places!

So, I finally did battle in the digital darkroom and eventually (after two sessions!!) tamed and bent the lighting to my will. I hope you like the finished shot :)

comments / critique / feedback always welcome :)

Really lovely. I like the textures of his 'wooly' coat against the frost.

Awwwwwww nice pony. reminds me of the pony rides on the beach at Blackpool when I was a little girl. OMG that's a few years back. hehe.

Love the photo. Love to get back to Datmoor with our cameras. The pony would make a great graphite drawing.

I know what you mean about those lighting conditions.. but you've really overcome them. It's great to see that little pony doing its own thing! I am enjoying seeing these guys.

Thanks all for the comments and feedback.

@L.Holm: thanks so much :) I pay close attention to the texture in my shots and it's good to have it appreciated :)

@Dors, I'm sure Dartmoor would welcome you back anytime :) I've had a few folks say that my work can be almost like a charcoal drawing - I'd love to see one, just to be able to compare.

@Diederick: You can't really see it at the size here, but at printed size, it has a bit of a quality of studio set about it. It adds to the slightly surreal quality and I like it :) I've just got to get it into a gallery now!

@imac: cheers matey :) Are you out and about with your camera yet?

@Chris: It really was a struggle, especially keeping the pony dark against the really contrasty gorse. Perseverance though, hey? ;)

@Betty: Yes, it was as though I wasn't there. I'm sure if I'd got much closer they would have taken off. But I was with them, sending out calming vibes and moving slowly and quietly around them, for a good 15 minutes or so. I'm sure this gained their trust enough for me to get this shot :)

@Andrea: I'm glad you liked it so much :) Have you had a tour around my other work yet? If not, I think you might like it. Maybe start here: www.highton-ridley.co.uk/monochrome
