A lakeside scene - in colour!

Unusually for me, this one seemed best in colour.

Lakeside Rest

I took this at the same time as my recent pony shots at the Miniature Pony Centre on Dartmoor.

Lakeside Rest

A simple scene, a bench overlooking a small lake complete with duck-house on stilts. It looked so restful, I was determined to give it a try but my god-daughter wanted to get back to petting the ponies instead. I'm glad she did because it was then that I took the pony shots that turned out so successfully—the ones I turned into a triptych.

So, does this pass muster for a colour shot? Are the colours lifelike? Are their any 'colour' rules of thumb I don't know about that I've heinously broken?

Regular readers will know I don't really do colour so I really am after some feedback :) Thanks!

comments / critique / feedback always welcome :)

Very pretty scene, though I don't see the contrast anywhere in the photo which makes your black and whites stand out. Everything seems a bit...washed out, maybe? Do you see what I mean?

The place looks peaceful but a bit lonely too. I have tons of colored photos but I'm not an expert. Just an opinion, this one seems to lack a point.

Eeerrr... No! I disagree. I love it. It's a great photo, specially for the light spreading in the grass like water flowing.

Very peaceful with natural light and color. Not an explosion of color, just a little crackle of color.

A relaxing scene one can sit, view and contemplate. then head for the ponies!

my rule of thumb for color is to increase vibrance and saturation for the entire scene. Then either saturate or desaturate, increase or decrease luminance of each color channel. Your scene will tell you which colors nee more tweaking.

I would increase the saturation and luminance of the red color channel and possibly the yellows too. This would make the reflected colors in the pond stand out more.

Of course, we all see things differently.

Oh, and increase the contrast, this will help the colors pop out.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the great tips and feedback - it's really welcome! As I don't do much with colour, I haven't confirmed the set-up of my monitor for colour. I set it up with an eye-one device thingy and according to that it's ok.

I did bump up the contrast a little on the shot but to my eyes (on my monitor) it looks ok - saturated colours, good contrast. So maybe it's my my eye for colour that's screwy? ..but other folks' colour work looks fine to me on this monitor...

So you see why I tend to stick to b&w!!

@Dusty: You've given me some ideas to play with next time I'm feeling brave ;)

@Courtney: And nice to meet you here :) I'm glad you've been enjoying my b/w work (much safer ground for me - hehe!). Hope to see more of you here.
..now, onto that next post...

@Shadow: Hmm, yes I see what you mean - it would be ideal as a jigsaw puzzle. With all those similar areas, it could be quite a challenge!
